Pittsburgh medical marijuana card: the local picture

Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County seat, follows the same state rules as every other Pennsylvania city. Two local details are worth knowing: the city's decriminalization of possession and how the law protects certified patients at work.

The card, and the job it protects

For a working adult, the first question may not be how to get a card but whether having one could cost a job. Pennsylvania's Medical Marijuana Act answers part of that directly. An employer may not discharge, threaten, refuse to hire or otherwise discriminate or retaliate against an employee solely because the employee is certified to use medical marijuana.

The protection has limits. Employers do not have to allow use on their premises and may discipline someone who is under the influence at work when the person's conduct falls below the accepted standard of care. They may also bar patients from duties at heights or in confined spaces, and from life-threatening or public-safety tasks, while under the influence. Our page on medical marijuana and employment lays out each rule.

Decriminalization stops at the city line

WHYY reports that Pittsburgh has decriminalized possession, making it a civil offense. Under state law, possessing and using marijuana remain crimes as of October 2026, according to the same reporting. The city's approach carries none of the workplace protections above. Those belong to certified patients only.

What it costs a Pittsburgh resident

The state fee is the same in Allegheny County as anywhere else: $50, paid once every 12 months, or $0 for people enrolled in Medicaid, CHIP, PACE/PACENET, SNAP or WIC. The certification is a separate charge set by the practitioner or service, and it recurs every year because each renewal requires a new certification. Our cost guide has a calculator for the first year.

Getting certified

Only an MD or DO with an active Pennsylvania license who has registered with the Department of Health can certify you. Statewide, the Department counted 1,920 approved practitioners as of March 1, 2026, and it publishes a list of them. Since Act 44 of 2021, certification can take place through real-time audio or video, so the physician does not need to be in your neighborhood.

Your diagnosis has to fit one of the program's 24 serious medical conditions. Check the qualifying conditions list before the appointment, and bring records that support it.

i

If your job involves heights, confined spaces or high-voltage work, ask your physician how dosing fits around your shifts. The law's workplace limits are tied to being under the influence.

Finding a dispensary

The Department's list of dispensaries with product (PDF) is the authoritative source for locations. Search it by Pittsburgh ZIP code or by the names of surrounding Allegheny County communities. The list is dated September 15, 2026, so call before you go.

Elsewhere in western and central Pennsylvania

Our guides to Erie and Altoona cover two more cities in this part of the state. Your next step: confirm your condition is on the list, create your registry account and schedule the certification.

This page explains Pennsylvania law and Department of Health guidance in general terms; it is not medical or legal advice, and only a registered physician can certify a patient.

Start with the certification

The state cannot issue a card until a registered Pennsylvania physician certifies you. An online evaluation is one route, and code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.
