Altoona medical marijuana card guide for central Pennsylvania

Altoona sits in Blair County, in the mountains of central Pennsylvania; the county seat is neighboring Hollidaysburg. Outside the big metro areas, planning matters more: who certifies you, what it costs and how far the nearest dispensary is.

Certification without leaving Blair County

The person who certifies you must be an MD or DO with an active Pennsylvania license who has registered with the Department of Health and finished its required training. In a smaller city, the nearest such physician may not be close. Act 44 of 2021 addressed that: practitioners may now issue certifications through synchronous interaction, which the law defines as a real-time exchange by audio or video.

That means a phone or video visit from Altoona counts, for a first certification and for every annual renewal. Statewide, the Department counted 1,920 approved practitioners as of March 1, 2026. Our page on online evaluations explains how to confirm a physician's registration and prepare for the call.

What it costs

The state fee is $50, paid once every 12 months no matter how many cards you are issued. Residents enrolled in Medicaid, CHIP, PACE/PACENET, SNAP or WIC pay $0. Patients in PACE or PACENET may also qualify for a $50 monthly benefit through the Medical Marijuana Assistance Program. The certification is priced by the practitioner or service and recurs every year. Our cost guide has the full fee table and a calculator.

Planning dispensary trips

Pennsylvania had 192 operating dispensaries as of March 1, 2026. To find the ones closest to you, check the Department's list of dispensaries with product (PDF), current as of September 15, 2026, and search by Blair County ZIP codes and nearby towns. Call before you drive to confirm hours and stock.

The supply rule helps with longer trips. You can receive up to a 90-day supply of individual doses at a time, and in the last seven days of any 30-day period you may obtain the next 90-day supply. Our dispensary guide explains what to bring and what is sold.

i

If driving is hard for you, a registered caregiver can make the trips. A patient may designate up to two caregivers, and caregiver background check fees have been eliminated since March 1, 2022.

The rules that travel with you

Carry your Department of Health ID card any time you have medical marijuana with you, and keep unused product in its original package. Flower is for vaporizing only; smoking is illegal. Pennsylvania has long applied zero-tolerance DUI rules to marijuana, so check current law and do not drive after using.

This page explains Pennsylvania law and Department of Health guidance in general terms; it is not medical or legal advice, and only a registered physician can certify a patient.

Start with the certification

The state cannot issue a card until a registered Pennsylvania physician certifies you. An online evaluation is one route, and code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off.
