Seeing a physician without the long drive
Only an MD or DO with an active Pennsylvania license, registered with the Department of Health and trained through a Department-approved course, can certify a patient. Statewide there were 1,920 approved practitioners as of March 1, 2026, and the Department publishes a list. If none is close to you in Erie County, the law gives you another option.
Act 44 of 2021 lets practitioners issue certifications through synchronous interaction, which the Medical Marijuana Act defines as a real-time exchange by audio or video. A phone or video visit from home counts. A form submitted for later review does not fit that definition. Our page on online evaluations explains how to prepare and how to confirm the physician is registered.
The state line does not move your card
Living in a border county raises a natural question about neighboring states. On the Pennsylvania side, the answer is firm: Pennsylvania's law requires patients to be residents and has no provision currently in effect for other states' cards. A New York or Ohio card will not buy anything at an Erie dispensary.
The reverse is a question for the other state. We have not verified whether any neighboring state honors a Pennsylvania card, so check with that state's regulator before you travel with medical marijuana. Inside Pennsylvania, you must carry your ID card whenever you have it with you, and unused product stays in its original package.
Need a physician certification?
Online evaluations are available for Pennsylvania residents. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off. The physician, not the booking service, decides whether you are certified.

The Department's list of dispensaries with product (PDF), current as of September 15, 2026, is the place to find locations. Search for Erie and nearby ZIP codes, and call ahead before a long drive to confirm hours and stock.
Because a trip may take time, it helps to know the supply rule. A dispensary may provide up to a 90-day supply of individual doses, and during the last seven days of any 30-day period you may obtain the next 90-day supply. Our dispensary guide covers what is sold; note that there are no edibles and flower is for vaporizing only.
Plan purchases around the seven-day window before each 30-day mark. It lets you restock before you run low, which matters when the nearest dispensary is not around the corner.
Keeping the card current from a distance
Each year you need a new certification. The Department emails you 60 days before your card expires, and the renewal certification can also be done by phone or video. The new card starts after the old one ends, so there is no reason to wait. The renewal guide has the details.
