Timing questions
How long does the whole process take?
It depends mostly on two waits. After a registered physician submits your certification, you have up to 60 days to pay, though there is no reason to wait. Once you pay, the Department of Health suggests allowing about 7 days for printing and about 14 days for mail delivery. If you register, get certified and pay promptly, plan on roughly three weeks from payment to card.
What happens if I miss the 60 days?
For a first card, the certification expires and you need a new one. That usually means paying for a second visit, so treat the payment as the day's next task after the physician submits your certification.
When do I have to do this again?
Every year. The card expires within one year of issuance, or earlier if the physician sets an earlier date. The Department emails you 60 days before expiration, you can be recertified any time after that email by any registered practitioner, and the new card starts after the old one ends. Our renewal guide explains how to avoid a gap.
Border questions
I have a medical card from another state. Can I use it in York?
No. Pennsylvania's law requires patients to be residents and has no provision currently in effect for other states' cards. Pennsylvania dispensaries serve only holders of a valid Department of Health ID card.
Can I take my Pennsylvania medicine into Maryland?
That is a question for Maryland, and we have not verified its rules. Do not assume any other state honors a Pennsylvania card; check with that state's regulator before you travel with medical marijuana.
I just moved to York County. When can I apply?
When your Pennsylvania driver's license or state ID shows your current York County address. The Department accepts only those two IDs as proof of residency, and the address must be current.
Need a physician certification?
Online evaluations are available for Pennsylvania residents. Code DRWDY85872 takes 5% off. The physician, not the booking service, decides whether you are certified.

Do I have to see a doctor in person?
No. Act 44 of 2021 allows certification through real-time audio or video. The physician must still be an MD or DO registered with the Department. Our page on online evaluations explains what counts.
Where do I buy?
Use the Department's list of dispensaries with product (PDF), current as of September 15, 2026, and search by York County ZIP codes. Bring your ID card, and expect no edibles and no smokable products; flower is sold for vaporizing.
Set a calendar reminder the day your card arrives, for 60 days before the printed expiration date. It is the easiest way to keep the renewal on schedule.
